First Japanese exchange a success

We enjoyed hosting our Japanese exchange partners from 21st to 26th July. After they had made us feel so welcome in March 2009, it was exciting to show them some of England.

The 2010 cricket season has been a successful one for the School. The U12A team finished their season unbeaten as did the U14B team. The 1st XI had an excellent season also, only losing one match to a strong Old Persean team.

The French Experience

On Thursday 17th June, 32 members of Year 8 left school to spend 4 days at 'Chateau du Molay' near Bayeux. They took part in many activities including French lessons given by the local French teacher Blandine, sporting activities and a morning out in Bayeux where they had to buy food to make a cold buffet lunch at the Chateau. Students also tasted typical French dishes such as frog legs and snails!

This year’s GCSE and A Level Art Show was held on Thursday 10 June. Our pupils’ artwork delighted parents, pupils and teachers alike, with flamboyant outfits made from discarded refuse, secret doors and drawers, copper birds and finely knitted jewellery.

Lower School perform The Wind in the Willows

A cast of forty two Lower School students produced two exuberant and witty performances of Alan Bennett’s ‘The Wind in the Willows’ on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th May under the direction of Emer Cullen. The students’ great sense of humour, energy and dedication within an intense rehearsal schedule, as well as their creativity and willingness to respond to advice, was most impressive. Huge thanks to such a talented cast, crew and to Alice Boagey, our wonderful producer.

This Wednesday we had another of our special decade days as part of our centenary celebrations, and we had the chance to travel back to the 1950's to the coronation of Elizabeth II. It was one of the most memorable events of the twentieth century, bringing some much needed glamour after the tough war years.
Community Service

Community Service is an integral and much-valued part of the Perse Enrichment Programme. CS volunteers help in local charity shops, in charitable institutions such as Blue Cross, local scouts and Girls’ Brigade troops, in residential homes for the elderly, in the domestic dwellings of senior citizens and in local primary schools, amongst many others.

The Easter term ended on a great note with the three special history days to help celebrate our Centenary this year. We all took part in Edwardian Day, WW2 Day and a 2010 Day! The children and staff all really entered into the spirit of the days.

Year 5's trip to France

Year 5 had a great trip to Chateau de Broutel, France. They enjoyed a range of activities including Chateau Olympics, shopping at the market, the aquarium, a chocolate factory, Thiepval Memorial and making mayonnaise. Compliments were made by locals and staff at the chateau about the children's excellent manners and French. Some of the students said "It was funny at the market when I accidently called myself a pair of shoes!" and "I enjoyed it, especially the disco on the last night." Bravo!

On field day, Year 8 took part in a trip to central Cambridge as part of their 'local actions, global effects' topic. They conducted land use surveys attempting to identify whether shops were independent and chain stores, allowing them to compare this to the city centre in the early 1980s.

67 students and 10 leaders travelled to Ross on Wye to train for the Perse Exploration Society (PES) summer expeditions to Sweden and Kenya. For the first night we camped at Biblins, a youth campsite on the banks of the River Wye run by the Forestry Commission.

We had a great time on Friday with Tony de Saulles’ visit. His talk was really special, because as he spoke, he actually got all Prep pupils to follow his drawings, inspiring many a budding cartoonist.

Having welcomed 16 French pupils to the Perse back in October, we set off for the Paris leg of the Exchange just before half-term. We travelled by Eurostar to Gare du Nord, Paris, and made our way on the métro to Neuilly-sur-Seine, an affluent leafy suburb to the West. We stayed for a week in host families, experiencing life à la française. Here is a brief account written by two Year 10 veterans of the French Exchange:

AS Art pupils attended an exciting printmaking workshop at The Curwen Print Study Centre. The aim of the day was for students to gain understanding of innovative printmaking techniques under the guidance of highly specialist tutors and artists' and to produce prints that will then become part of their AS portfolio. They explored both traditional and new techniques combining drypoint with monoprinting and viscosity printing. The group worked industriously and produced many vibrant pieces of work.

Geography Department Visit to Iceland 2009

24 Perse students travelled to Iceland for five days at the end of August. Highlights included a visit to the Blue Lagoon, watching the super-heated water eruptions of the geysir "Strokkur" and the dramatic waterfall at Gullfoss. We also flew in light aircraft to the Westmann Islands and explored the volcano that threatened the economy of these islands in 1973. The trip will happen again in August 2010 and is open to all students in Year 9, 10, 11 and Lower Sixth.

On Friday 19th June, The Perse School hosted the 2nd annual Book Mastermind Final with 6 competitors from the Leys School and the Perse. After a very exciting competition, the title of Book Mastermind 2009 went to Milly Karimjee of the Leys School, while 2nd and 3rd places went to Sam Hurrell and Ben Cowley from The Perse. David Jones, a former teacher, was the Question Master and Richard Young, Children’s Library Services Manager for Cambridgeshire, was the guest speaker.

On the 19th and 20th of May the Lower School performed an adaptation of William Golding’s famous novel “Lord of the Flies”. Set in the 1940s, a group of boys become stranded on a desert island when the aircraft evacuating them from a war zone pitches into the sea, leaving the boys to fend for themselves with disturbing consequences.

Reception Visits Linton Zoo

The Reception classes had a wonderful time at Linton Zoo on Wednesday 6th May. We had a talk about different animals with fur, feathers and scales and enjoyed handling some of these; a bearded lizard, a snake and guinea pigs, as well as snake skin and porcupine spines.
Easter Ski Venture to Austria

On the Friday before Easter seven Year 7 boys and 25 Year 6 boys from the Perse Prep school embarked on a 20 hour coach journey to Austria. Several Disney films and a mountain of Haribo wrappers later we arrived at Wagrain in the Sportwelt region of Austria. Our first sleepy task was to get our boots and skis fitted before a refreshing snowball battle; First Form vs. Year 6 of course.

On Monday 23rd March, two coaches containing the entirety of the Third Form and eight members of staff left for an English and Drama related Field Day visit to London, long before the first school bell. Lent Term Writing Competition Winners

This term the Year 3 and 4 children were challenged to write and illustrate their own comic strip stories - just like Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul! Further up the school, the Year 5 and 6 pupils’ technological skills were tested with our visual PowerPoint science fiction story competition. Limited to between 12 and 20 slides, the entrants had to include a reference to some kind of ‘promise’.

The Lent Term has been another busy term in the Music Department. The obvious highlight for the pupils has been the staging of Grease! in the Mumford Theatre at the end of January 2009. At The Perse Prep we held two special assemblies to mark the 90th Anniversary of the end of the First World War. Lots of the children had family members who had been involved in the First and Second World Wars, and they have produced booklets about their involvement.

Success of Community Art project

Last term a group of ten Fifth Form, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth Perse pupils created some visually exciting artwork for Millington Road Nursery School as part of their Community Art Enrichment option. The pupils worked with the nursery school children helping them to design images that were then developed by Perse pupils into mini road signs, a door mural and the redecoration of an old playhouse.

Government statistics published today suggest that students at The Perse School gained ‘zero’ in the league tables of GCSE examination performance. We are delighted to make it clear that 100% of our students gained 5A*-C grades, including Maths and English.
University Applications Success

Perse Sixth Formers have been very successful in their university applications. Twenty-six students have been awarded places at Oxford and Cambridge; this equals our best ever Oxbridge results. The offers include six places to read History, and five for Medicine. In total thirteen Perse applicants have received offers from Medical Schools, and this is a major achievement given the level of competition for places.

The 2008 season was another successful season for Perse Rugby. The 1st XV recorded 11 wins out of a possible 13, losing only to St. Albans and Bedford, currently two of the best ranked schools in the country.

The Perse Under 16 team represented Cambridgeshire at the East Indoor Finals. Three wins, a draw and a defeat in their pool matches left them behind Ipswich School, who were overall winners, but level on points with Old Loughtonians Hockey Club. Perse finished in Second place on goals scored as the two were level on points and goal difference.

Kirkham's All-Stars take on the Perse XI

On Saturday 15th November, an All-Star hockey team containing members of Great Britain's Olympic hockey squad took on a team of Perse students. The match was organised by Glenn Kirkham who has worked as a coach at the school since 2005. Glenn invited some of his Beijing team mates including Alistair McGregor, Richard Mantell, Richard Alexander, Jon Bleby and Rob Moore to take on a Perse XI.

Perse Players Trip to Edinburgh 2008

In March 2008 the Perse Players performed Henry IV for a School audience. A number of changes took place over the following months and in August we found ourselves one director down, standing in Edinburgh and slightly damp. We knew we were in for a challenge, with only two rehearsals before facing the famous Festival audience. We were all thrilled, however, at the prospect of performing at such an historic event and in front of paying members of the public.

Rebecca Harvey, a ceramicist, started work as Artist in Residence this term. She has been working with all pupils & over the coming weeks they will produce work to be displayed in New School. Rebecca will continue her own work whilst she is with us, so Prep pupils will have plenty of opportunities to see her expertise in action in the Art Room. Her presence has had a huge impact on our artistic life & the ceramic work that she has been working on with all our boys and girls is looking stunning.

CCF Field Weekend – Exercise Pelican Walk

On the wet and rainy morning that was Sunday 5th of October twenty-five army cadets arrived at school in readiness for embarking on our first field weekend of the year at Beckingham and Fulbeck MOD training area in Lincolnshire – exercise Pelican Walk. After a coach ride through what is affectionately known as “Special Forces weather” (driving wind and rain), we were greeted at our accommodation with a surprisingly clear sky and the feeble rays of the sun starting to make their presence felt.

Year 6 Time Capsules

Year 6 are currently studying Ancient Greece in History. In class they discussed how much of what we know about this period is from the discoveries of archaeologists. Year 6 were then asked to imagine that they buried a time capsule that would stay buried for hundreds of years, before being dug up by a future archaeologist!
National recognition for outstanding performance by Perse pupils

We are delighted that ten Perse pupils have received special recognition from the Edexcel board for finishing in the top 10 nationally in AS levels and GCSE subject papers. Two pupils, Pietro Miozzo and Alexandre Loktionov managed this feat in two different subjects.

Last term, pupils in Year 4 designed brochures advertising trips into space so that Mrs Swain could choose a holiday for when she retires.
Geography Trip to Iceland 2008

35 students from the Third and Forth forms travelled to Iceland for five days at the end of August with Mr Crabtree, Mr King, Mr Cross and Miss Alcott. Highlights of the trip included a visit to the Blue Lagoon, watching the super-heated water eruptions of the geysir “Strokkur” and the dramatic waterfall at Gullfoss. We also flew in light aircraft to the Westmann Islands and explored the volcano that threatened the economy of these islands in 1973.

Soapstone carving workshop with Cambridgeshire sculptor, Mel Fraser

Local Cambridgeshire sculptor, Mel Fraser, joined the Fourth Form artists in June to run an innovative stone carving workshop. The pupils each carved into pieces of soapstone using rasps, files and sandpaper. They then polished and buffed the stone using oil and wax.

Community Art with St Alban's Primary School pupils

In March and April the Community Art group worked with St Alban's Primary School Year 5 pupils. The pupils visited The Perse Upper School Art Department and made decorative clay tiles which they then glazed. Perse pupils then visited St Alban's Primary School on Field Day, delivering the tiles and using the opportunity to work in small groups designing a mural for their class room.

During a pageant to celebrate medieval Europe, a wealthy unnamed Italian falls from his horse and wakes up in the 11th century. Or so everyone thinks. An entourage surrounds him to perpetuate this fantasy and 18 years of madness ensue. Following the death of his mother, the wealthy Italian's nephew arrives at the 'Court of Henry IV' with a plan to unmask the illusion.

Pulley Systems: The pupils were asked to design and make a model to transport a Play Mobil figure over a distance of 25cms using a pulley system. The pupils worked in pairs and developed a wide range of individual ideas and designs. During our weekly form times in 3 Aleph we have all sorts of chats and discussions. One of our favourite topics has been animals / pets. Out of one discussion came a request for the form to sponsor a Galapagos tortoise egg! (It turns out to be a hot topic because the Galapagos Conservation Trust is about to launch an Easter campaign asking people to sponsor a Giant Galapagos tortoise egg as an alternative to buying Easter eggs. See information below.)

Flooded Out!

The Year 3 and 4 production of Flooded Out, a musical based on the story of Noah, was a tremendous success. Enthusiastic singing, excellent acting and a good deal of humour were the hallmarks of the performances which played to audiences of over one hundred and sixty each night. Well done all!
Community Art

On Monday 10th of December the Community Art group visited the Hollies Residential Nursing Home on Queen Edith's Way. During the Michaelmas Term the pupils had made screen prints, paintings and Christmas decorations to hang at the Hollies. The work was delivered with mince pies and cake and the pupils chatted with the residents.

Whist yesterdays weather was decidedly British - the atmosphere at School was Egyptian. Year 5 had the most wonderful day learning about this remarkable civilisation and we are enormously grateful to the kind mothers who bedecked themselves in an array of amazing garments and joined in the fun.

In November 2007 AS and A2 Art pupils attended an exciting printmaking workshop at The Curwen Print Study Centre at Chilford Hall as part of their A Level Art development. They spent the day working alongside professional printmakers exploring both traditional and new innovative techniques combining drypoint with monoprinting and viscosity printing. The Fifth Form play, An Evening of Short Plays and Sketches by Samuel Beckett & Harold Pinter was peformed in The Perse School Lecture Theatre, Thursday 8th and Friday 9th November 2007. "Whilst plays such as Beckett's Waiting for Godot and Pinter's The Birthday Party are commonly performed at theatres across the country, the Fifth Form treated us to a much more obscure experience...". Wind Band tour to Iceland

In October 2007 members of the Senior Wind Band performed two concerts in South Iceland. The first concert was in a brand-new School in Selfoss and was an inaugural performance for the School. The second was in the impressive Nesskirkja Church in Reykjavik in front of 250 pupils from the local School. All the performers also enjoyed sight-seeing thanks to the Essential Iceland Tour Company, visiting an erupting geyser, a volcano, two spellbinding waterfalls and a swim in the Blue Lagoon!

The children have been so excited to see our new hall actually beginning to look like a hall! We can peep through specially constructed viewing panels to keep an eye on the progress. So far we are ahead of schedule thanks to lots of hard work, team work and fine weather.
