SkiesThis week all year 6 pupils went to the Fitzwilliam Museum as part of their project on ‘Skies in Paintings.’

A member of the Fitzwilliam Education Team gave a talk about how Skies are depicted in paintings by different artists. The tour started in the Italian gallery focusing on religious paintings and then continued in the Dutch Gallery. The pupils were asked to observe the different approach in the paintings and how the artists had painted the skies.

We then went to look at a group of paintings completed by the Impressionists, most notably Monet. The pupils attention was drawn to the range of colours and marks made by Monet. Also the importance of light and how this changed the colours in the sky. Finally we finished by looking at Auerbach's painting of 'Fog on Primrose hill in London.

The pupils were clearly very interested in by the content of the talk and made some very perceptive and thoughtful comments.

The cloud studies pictured here were completed in the classroom. The pupil looked very closely at a section of a painting and they reproduced this as accurately as possible using brushes, sponges and sometimes a palette knife.
