Prep Art 2The aim of the Art Department is to create an environment where the pupils feel inspired and excited to explore and develop a range of new art skills.

Projects are structured to encourage independence and a willingness to discuss ideas and different techniques.

Project work is devised to enable the pupils to experience a range of different materials including charcoal, oil pastels, watercolour and poster paint and also work on both 2D and 3D projects.

Pupils are shown examples of both historical and contemporary art through classroom displays, books and digital media.

Great emphasis is placed on observational drawing, particularly from first hand experience. Pupils in Year 5 recently visited the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge where they completed drawings of suits of armour in the Armoury Collection.

These drawings then formed the starting point for a project.

A project on cubism

Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 keep sketch books which they use for a range of drawing exercises and activities.

Textile skills are explored through a variety of processes including weaving, tie dye, screen printing, puppet making and constructed textiles.

Three dimensional works are explored through a range of media, including clay, plaster, papier-mâché, card, wood and wire.

Art work is regularly displayed throughout the school and there is an annual Art Exhibition in the summer term, which is held at the school.
