Speaking and listening; reading accuracy and comprehension; writing; spelling and handwriting objectives guide the scheme of work, which broadly follows the progression set out in the Framework for Literacy. Similarly, the range and variety of language experience offered (fiction, poetry and non-fiction) is based upon requirements described in that document.
The school adopts the Attainment Targets of Key Stage 2 as specified by the National Curriculum for English in such a way that pupils are given the opportunity to succeed at each of the levels.
The school’s literacy standards are high and we intend:
· to develop pupils’ ability to communicate effectively in a technological world
· to foster and encourage an appreciation of language and literature written in English
· to encourage a variety of creative and imaginative expression
· to encourage pupils’ to be enthusiastic and critical readers
The curriculum provides for eight English lessons of 35 or 40 minutes, each week. They include one period of drama for all year groups and one library lesson for Years 3 and 4. Cross-curricular language links further reinforce reading and writing skills. Pupils also regularly read and perform for the school in assembly.
Fluency and confidence in reading is of paramount importance. All pupils are expected to read regularly at home in addition to their set English homework and to keep a record of what they have read. Parents are asked to listen to their child read and to discuss the reading material with them. Books from the School Library and the smaller class libraries can be borrowed for use in school or at home.
Each year group studies a number of set texts during the year. These form a basis for discussion and comprehension work, as well as for the pleasure and appreciation of language. Year group texts are regularly reviewed by the librarian and English teaching staff. The current text selection is set out below.

English homework is set once a week and tasks are varied (e.g. completing classwork, sketching ideas, writing, researching, and reading aloud). Spelling knowledge is tested regularly and appropriate tasks are set for homework.
Writing in ink pen is introduced during the second term of Year 4. We recommend a good standard cartridge pen (e.g. Parker, Osmiroid, Platignum). Pupils should use only blue ink and should be equipped with replacement cartridges. Pupils experiencing particular difficulty with the use of a traditional ink pen may, at the discretion of their English Teacher, use a roller-ball (such as a Papermate ‘Gel-Roller’ (fine line).
