Aims and Philosophy

The Perse Art department is committed to offering a stimulating environment offering a wide range of art and design practices, in the belief that creativity is a vital part of a full education. We believe art gives you a different perspective by raising the human condition and enriching personal experience.

Our aims are:

"The artist is not a special kind of person, but every person is a special kind of artist."
Ananda Coomraswamy

Facilities

FacilitiesThere are facilities for painting, drawing, sculpture, print-making, pottery, textiles and photography. Lessons are taught in small structured groups with plenty of provision for experimenting with new ideas. It is central to our philosophy that the studios remain open well beyond the timetabled day; extra-curricular activities include Pottery Club, Art Club and Life drawing.

The Pelican Gallery is housed within the department providing an upper and lower gallery. This is used to exhibit work from all year groups, GCSE, AS and A2 level artwork assessments and as a venue for a professional selling exhibitions of artwork. To date, over 100 artists of local and national repute have exhibited with us, including Anthony Green RA and Professor Bryan Kneale RA. Pupils have had the opportunity to attended several innovative workshops run by professional artists including monotype, felting, wire and paper sculpture and textiles workshops.

Outside the classroom

Over the past few years we have run a variety of both residential and non-residential trips to galleries, museums and colleges including trips to London, Cambridge, Yorkshire, Paris and Barcelona. Pupils are also encouraged to meet artists in their studios under the annual Cambridge Open Studios programme. We also run a Field Day activity each year for a whole year group such as collaborative sculpture making.
