About the Library
The library is in a pleasant and appealing setting on one level, which can accommodate up to 48 study spaces whilst the computerized library management system, Heritage, gives all pupils and staff access to the resources within the library from any computer in the school.
The library is open from 8.00am and is staffed from 9.15am to 5.30pm although borrowing is permitted outside staffed hours, provided a manual issue form is completed.
We have a varied collection of resources and can offer books for loan, books for reference only, audio books, DVDs, magazines and periodicals, as well as a good selection of British and overseas newspapers. All teaching departments contribute to stock selection, and suggestions from all individuals, staff and pupils alike is encouraged.
There are computer workspaces with access to the Internet, Intranet and Library catalogue.
What we aim to do
"Try to learn something about everything and everything about something"
T.H.Huxley
The Library at The Perse Upper School is committed to encouraging and enabling all pupils to achieve the best of which they are capable academically as well as providing them with the opportunities and encouragement to discover interests and talents which lie beyond the academic curriculum. We want to stimulate a love of learning and to promote an independence of mind and intellectual curiosity.
To achieve this we aim:
- To develop and maintain in the Library a collection of resources which are appropriate to:
- the research needs of individual curriculum requirements for both pupils and teachers
- reading for pleasure and informal learning
- individual interests - To encourage independent learning
- To provide both a quiet working area and a venue for research-based and reading activities.
"Even the most misfitting child,
Who's chanced upon the library’s worth,
Sits with the genius of the earth
And turns the key to the whole world."
Ted Hughes
