What is the The Perse Exploration Society?Ecuador 2004

PES is a group dedicated to developing outdoor skills throughout the year and putting these into practice on international expedition. Members of the group meet during Monday enrichment afternoons and Field weekends and go on expedition between June and September.

Who can join?

Iceland 2005PES is open to all members of the senior section of the school who can choose to apply on a year by year basis. Once the group is established members of the society are sub-divided into 'Fires' for team-building and organisation purposes. This allows the opportunity for leadership training and experience throughout the year. The Fire leader from each of the Fires forms an executive body to oversee the running of the expedition, the programme and the fundraising. However all members of the group have the opportunity to impact on the training programme and responsibility for the successful and productive running of the training programme and the expedition. Weekend survival, hiking and climbing trips are run during Field weekends and members of PES are invited on an Easter sailing trip to the Norfolk Broads.

When are the expeditions?Romania 2007

Due to the size of the group we currently run one expedition for Year 11 and another longer and more remote expedition for the Sixth Form. This year, students from Year 11 spent 2 weeks in Sweden on a Survival and Bushcraft training course which included elements such as canoeing, fire lighting, fishing and emergency first aid and rescue. This takes place in the last two weeks in June after GCSE's. During late July and August, the Sixth form are undertaking a five week expedition. In 2009, this was to Ladakh in the Himalayas where they worked in a remote school before trekking to the summit of Stok Kangri at 6100m.
