Overview
The Middle School is the largest of the School's three sections both in terms of the numbers of pupils and year groups it contains. There are over 300 pupils in total in Years 9, 10 and 11. However, it is by no means an impersonal place. There are sufficient numbers to be able to offer a wide curriculum and range of extra-curricular activities, but small enough to be able to tailor education to the individual.
Over 30 pupils join us each year into Year 9 and often we have a small intake to Year 10 and 11. New pupils are invited to an induction afternoon and we do all we can to make them feel part of the community. We really value Year 9 entry to The Perse and after a few weeks it is very difficult to identify new pupils from established.
Ed Wiseman (Head of Middle School and Year 11, ewwiseman@perse.co.uk ), Kyle McLean (Head of Year 9) and Richard Morgan (Head of Year 10) lead the Middle School.

Our Aims
Our aim in the Middle School is for pupils to gain the most out of their education at The Perse, enjoying it and adding to the community. To achieve this we develop an environment of effective learning, respect, empathy and enjoyment - these are values which underpin all we do.
In the years that culminate in them sitting their first public examinations and build towards Sixth Form study we help pupils maximize their potential both as learners and individuals. We are justly proud of the pupils' and our achievements in these areas.
Pastoral Support
Each pupil is carefully assigned to a tutor group. Each tutor has responsibility for only 12 or 13 pupils. Pupils remain with the same tutor for all three of the years in the Middle School.
There is a strong relationship between pupils and their tutors which is central to the good pastoral care we strive to provide. We provide this through:
- Numerous informal discussions and interactions during the week
- One-to-one tutorials every three weeks
- 20 minutes tutorial time every fortnight focusing on reflection
- 40 minute PSHE time every fortnight
- Middle School Assembly time every fortnight
Tutors oversee pupils' holistic education and help pupils find activities and hobbies they can enjoy and continue for years beyond school.

Extra-Curricular
Middle School pupils pride themselves on being 'all-rounders'. Whilst we strive to ensure that all pupils maximise their potential academically, we are keen that every pupil takes advantage of the opportunities on offer.
