Aims and Philosophies
The Perse Cricket structure is moving with the modern era of cricket. We have introduced a programme of developing and practicing key skills in addition to structured and focused nets sessions for all pupils playing cricket. There are a number of cricket coaches on the staff and we also use professional coaches from outside the school to introduce new and varied techniques.
The Perse vision is to try and maximise the efficiency of all three sections of the School in order to improve the overall standard of Perse Cricket.
Lower School:
- Main focus = Technique.
- Technique focused part to every Games session, mixed in with skill specific fun games to ensure understanding within a game situation.
- Why? By the time the pupils reach Middle School, their technique should be in place, meaning that we can concentrate on other important factors within the game.
Technical requirements:
- Batting – correct technique for all the major shots & running between the wickets.
- Bowling – ensuring a competent and above all, safe, bowling action.
- Fielding – correct catching, throwing and stopping techniques with an emphasis on attacking the ball in order to create run out opportunities (one/two handed pick up).
Middle School:
- Main focus = Tactics of the game.
- At this stage, players should be thinking more about the game.
- Captain’s should have good tactical awareness and have the ability to set differing fields to best suite the particular situation.
- It may be that two captains are picked – one acts as team motivator (in charge of warm up, encouragement in the field etc) and one as key decision maker with regards to bowling / fielding changes within the game.
Senior School:
- Main focus = Psychological aspects of the game.
I. How should I approach an innings?
II. Mind set prior to batting – individual routines.
III. Mind set in the field.
IV. Working out a batsman’s strengths and weaknesses and adapting to these quickly within a game situation.
Fixtures
There is a strong fixture list in the Summer Term and pupils play against some of the best teams in East Anglia and beyond. Year groups for pupils aged 12 to 15 have an A and B team and there are 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI for 16+. The U14 and U15 take part in the County Cups and, if these teams are successful they play in the National rounds of their cups.
We have block fixtures against Oundle, The Leys, Norwich, Chigwell, Culford, Forest, Bishop's Stortford College, and Bedford. We also have fixtures against schools such as Magdalen College School, Brentwood and Ipswich.
Facilities
For matches we have four excellent pitches on the school grounds. We also have superb net facilities including six indoor nets and six lane outdoor artificial (all-weather nets).

Achievements
The Perse has been one of the strongest cricket schools in Cambridgeshire for a number of recent years. The U14 and U15 teams are current regional County Cup winners (2010). The U15’s (2009) are also reigning champions of the Twenty/20 Competition at Magdalen College.
Season Reports
Tours
The Perse tours St Lucia in the Caribbean at U13-U15 level every two years during the Easter holidays as part of their pre-season. The standard of Cricket out there is good and it provides a fantastic cultural experience for the pupils also. There is potential to tour Sri Lanka and Australia in the future. The next Cricket Tour will be Easter 2011.
